Attention all parents! Within this section, you may gain important information regarding public and private schools near the Preston Community. There are many wonderful and diverse forms of educational facilities in Wake County. The options for families and their children vary from public traditional, year-round, magnet & charter to private to home school. For public school enrollment each student is initially assigned to a "base" school that serves his/her grade level. The base school assignment reflects the street/area in which that student's parent lives. The Wake County School locator is the best resource for determining your public school options. Schools in the Wake County Public School System primarily follow a traditional calendar or a year-round calendar. The traditional school allows for the 180-day calendar with one long summer break. A year-round school is simply a rescheduling of the standard 180-day school calendar to keep the learning process continuous and to maximize the use of school facilities. Students have periodic, short breaks rather than one long summer break. The Magnet Program and Calendar Option application acceptance period for the following school year will be in February. Applications will be online only. Check the Wake County Public School site for more information. The year-round calendar simply spreads the 180 school days throughout the entire year. Students attending a year-round school are in school for 45 days and then have a 15-day break. Year-round students have the same holidays as students on the traditional calendar. Under the year-round plan the school calendar is divided into four nine-week quarters. Each quarter is separated by a three-week break. Students, therefore, are in school nine weeks, off three weeks, etc. Magnet schools follow either a traditional or modified year round calendar. They use the standard Wake County course study coupled with innovative approaches to learning. Magnets work to spark the imagination of students and offer additional electives and themed studies that typically would not be offered in base schools. The network of magnet schools include a choice of instructional programs such as Creative Arts and Sciences, Gifted and Talented, International Studies, Active Learning & Technology, International Baccalaureate, Center For Spanish Language/IBPYP, Community Model, Leadership, Montessori, Museums, University Connections, Center For Leadership & Technology and Year-Round. Charter schools are similar to public schools in that there is no charge or tuition for enrollment. Each school is supported by public tax dollars and follows the same teacher certification and testing standards as Wake County schools. Every school has there own teaching and learning philosophy, plus vary in grade and calendar offerings. Parents must contact each individual school to see if they have openings. Each year, during an application period (normally February), parents have the option of applying for magnet programs or a calendar option school serving their area. If a student is placed in a magnet or calendar option school, that school becomes the assigned school for that student. In the way of nonpublic education, parents in Wake County have the option of private schooling or home schooling for their children. There is a vast selection of private schools and home school support groups, some of which can be found in the private and general school sections below. Parents, teachers and administrators may also post information about activities, meetings or other events happening at their schools by using the Add Local School Information link below. |

St. Michael's Catholic SchoolThe curriculum stresses academic achievement within a Christian community where the child feels that he/she is loved and respected by his/her peers as well as the teacher. Vatican II texts are used so that our theology is in compliance with the bishops of the world. United with each other in meaningful liturgy and prayer, the students can further come to an understanding of the Christian life. At St. Michael, we are attempting to 'teach as Jesus did.'
The Diocesan curriculum guidelines, consistent with the State of North Carolina guidelines, are followed for the teaching of all secular subject areas. The curriculum is marked by current content and fresh approaches to methodology. There is emphasis on principles rather than fact, on learning through problem solving rather than by precept. Individualized instruction and ability grouping are employed whenever feasible. We strive to offer a program which makes use of many sources of reading material, a wide variety of audio-visual and technology tools and a multi-text approach to the content areas.

Homeschooling in Wake CountyNorth Carolina law defines a home school as a non-public school in which the student receives academic instruction from his/her parent, legal guardian, or a member of the household in which the student resides. Two household schools are permitted. The home school academic instructional setting must always meet the home school legal definition of G.S. 115C-563(a) and is limited to students from no more than two households. Academic instructional settings involving students from three or more households must satisfy instead the conventional non-public school requirements. Also, see Professional Educators’ Role in Home Schools.
The North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE) is authorized by state law to receive home school notices of intent to begin initial operation and to terminate operation, and to annually inspect the school’s student attendance and nationally standardized achievement test result records. -
